Fridrich the Arborist
Hans Schmidt's middle son, Johann Fridrich and his wife Veronica belonged to the Buhl congregation. Fridrich signed his own name and routinely left out the typical 'e' in the first syllable. Unlike his two brothers, he was a farmer. The only record that mentions his occupation is Veronica's death record, where she is referred to as the widow of Fridrich Schmidt the Ackersman. This is usually translated as "peasant," but because even Merriam Webster notes that "peasant" is often pejorative, "farmer" is probably a better term. It appears that Fridrich only had one child who survived to adulthood.
We chose "Arborist" to separate him from the many Johann Friederichs in this family, because of his unexpected death. It seems that he was hit by a tree branch while working, ultimately leading to his death. The pastor who recorded these events noted that Fridrich was honored with a service including singing, bell ringing, and a sermon on the day of his burial.
