George Schmitt was born Jan 3, 1829 to Friedrich Schmitt and Jeannette May Schmitt. He emigrated with his family from Hatten, Alsace to Columbus, Ohio. He fought in the Mexican War (1847) in the same company (Otto Zirckel's) as his older brother Frederick Schmitt. According to the oral history, shortly after the war he went to Texas and was never heard from again. Surname probably SCHMITT, SCHMIDT, or SMITH.
Note also that several trees on Ancestry.com show George as killed in the Civil War and buried in the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas. This George Schmitt was actually a cousin from Wisconsin (descendant of Christian) who was born in 1841.
